The concluding volume of this wordless trilogy (Journey, BCCB 10/13 and Quest, BCCB 9/14) offers a final look at the fantastical kingdom entered by two kids who wield magic with their colored markers. This time they’re joined by the girl’s father, who followed her into the kingdom. Unfortunately, the realm is under attack from a warrior who possesses a ferocious weapon: a device that sucks away the colors that the king and the kids have drawn and the markers that produce them. The girl and her dad escape, and it’s Dad who, inspired by a cave painting, draws the trap that eventually catches the villain, thereby saving the day. It’s disappointing that it’s the grownup who triumphs in what’s been a kid-centered adventure to date, but the story is really about a father and daughter finally going on an adventure together after Dad has prioritized work over his kid. The visual focus this time is therefore more on them than on the rich and creative detailing of the kingdom, but it’s still a treat to revisit the magical flying creatures, lantern-lit woods, and shimmering ramparts of the island city. As with the third book in many trilogies, its merit lies in the wrapup rather than in its standalone impact, but fans of the first two (and fathers wishing they could join in the adventure) will appreciate the warm conclusion.
