Abstract

How are we to understand the thematization of revelation at the heart of Schelling’s late thought—as the accomplishment of Idealism as science of the Absolute or as a metaphysical elaboration of Christianity? I will argue that the Schelling of the Spätphilosophie is not an Idealist on account of his rupture with ontotheology; neither does he abandon the philosophical for the theological. Schelling insists on the limited nature of a philosophy of the Absolute and complements it with a philosophy in which God as God successively but never finally reveals himself in history. He is thus a philosophical eschatologist.
