Abstract

Although officially Chechnya today presents a façade of peace and reconstruction, behind the scenes, Putin’s chosen deputy Ramzan Kadyrov continues to terrorize his subjects. The “patriotic” policies that Kadyrov has imposed upon his citizens require erasing the memory of historical events. Nevertheless, some citizens’ action groups continue to fight for historical memory and human rights. This article focuses on the work of the independent Grozny magazine Dosh (Word), its engagement with issues of historical memory, current disappearances, false arrests, and, through its partner publication, Slovo zhenshchiny (Women’s Word), women’s problems and rights.
