Abstract

Phillip B. Zarrilli is an emeritus professor of performance studies at the University of Exeter and a fellow at the International Research Institute, Interweaving Performance Cultures at Freie Universitat, Berlin. He lived in India for a total of seven years between 1976 and 1993, where he underwent intensive training in and conducted research on kalarippayattu as well as researching kathakali dance-drama. His book The Kathakali Complex: Performance and Structure (1984) shared groundbreaking research on the Indian performing tradition in English. Zarrilli works internationally as a director, performer, teacher, actor trainer, and scholar and was recently invited to speak at the international conference Turning Point of Theatre at Shanghai Theatre Academy in China.
