This essay traces a New Yorker’s move to the Deep South for a teaching job and chronicles her experience of dating a Southerner who reveals himself to be racist, sexist, and homophobic. Her experience leads her to reflect on the changes in her nuclear family brought about by her mother coming out as a lesbian in mid-life as well as her relationship with her mother’s current partner.
