Abstract

English Abstract:

Wikipedia is discussed as a case in point for problematic knowledge distribution in the digital age, problematic as it eliminates the individual from all processes of knowledge production and thus has no transparency. It also lacks deliberate quality control. The task of scholars in the humanities (including musicologists) is diametrically opposite, that is, scholars should not submit and assimilate to such procedures with their obscure ideal of community. Instead, scholars should and must claim responsibility, clearly and unequivocally, which implies auctorial responsibility and editorial oversight. MGG Online aims at producing highly supervised scholarship, while adapting to the technological conditions of the twenty-first century. As such it is crucial that it operates under the wings of a publishing house that facilitates the establishment, maintenance, and balance of responsibility, oversight, and elaborate disciplinary standards.
