Abstract

Today, close to 80,000 Syrian families are housed at the Za’atari refugee camp, a barren strip of land twelve kilometers from the Syrian border and seventy kilometers from the Jordanian capital, Amman. In late December 2013 and early January 2014, Nina Berman, along with three other photographers, created a visual display on a security wall along the camp. Documenting the everyday lived experiences in the camp, the display on the security wall is visible to both the subjects of the photographs and to visitors, diplomats, and other actors who decide the fate of the refugees living within.
