Speculative Ruins: Photographic Interrogations of the Spanish Economic Crisis

This article explores the visual representation of what I call “speculative ruins” in recent Spanish photography. The photographers examined here employ the ruin to confront and expose fictitious capital or the deceptive practice of real estate speculation. In doing so, they compel us to consider the financialization of the concept of “home” over the last decade and to conceive of abandoned housing not only as a symptom, but as a site for change and transformation.

Este artículo analiza la representación visual en la fotografía española reciente de lo que denomino “ruinas especulativas.” Los fotógrafos examinados aquí emplean la ruina para enfrentarse con y para revelar el capital ficticio o la práctica engañosa de la especulación inmobiliaria. De esta manera, nos incitan a considerar la mercantilización del concepto de la vivienda durante la última década y a concebir de la vivienda abandonada no sólo como síntoma, sino como sitio de cambio y transformación.
