Abstract:
In YA texts by Sandra Cisneros and Veronica Roth, the social injustice of segregation and the pressure to forsake hybrid identities shape the coming-of-age process. While both novels encourage teens to resist this pressure, Roth’s avoids directly acknowledging issues of ethnicity and racism, missing important opportunities for witnessing and allyship.
