Abstract

Little Lizzie & the Green Fairy by Janet Munsil is a short play written for the 2011 Wrecking Ball theatre event in Victoria, a night of political theatre organized by Theatre SKAM in response to the Canadian federal election. In this humorous adaptation of Cinderella, Green Party leader Elizabeth May tells the story of an intelligent, articulate girl named Little Lizzie who sadly failed to receive an invite to the palace of broadcasting to attend the Leader’s Debate with her stepsisters Jackie, Jilly, Michaela, and Harpy. Little Lizzie discusses her frustrations with the Green Fairy and the orphaned issues (poverty, energy policy, oil tankers, Libya, arts funding, and shale gas), and pines for a new kind of political dialogue in Canada.
