The authors describe a project undertaken to develop a computer-aided choreology system. It was initiated in 1971 by a choreographer who suggested using a computer to interpret dance notation to produce an animated figure. The authors trace the steps involved in devising their system and, by commenting on both its advantages and its disadvantages, identify ways of further improving its design. It is hoped that new technology will increase the speed of the system and reduce its cost, making it a useful tool for choreographers, dancers and dance schools.
