The covers of our 2016 volume will feature works by artists associated with the Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery, located on St. John’s Square in Limerick City. We are once again pleased to showcase the lively printmaking culture of Ireland; in previous volumes of New Hibernia Review we have featured work from the Graphic Studio Gallery in Dublin (volume 12, 2008); the Belfast Print Workshop (volume 16, 2012), and Cork Printmakers (volume 18, 2014). Limerick Printmakers was founded in 1999 by graduates of the Limerick College of Art and Design. It provides an ongoing program of classes and exhibitions, as well as studios for member artists. Our spring cover is an untitled work by Eoin Barry, b. 1991. Barry describes himself as a “social printmaker” and teacher in Limerick. He studied at Limerick School of Art and Design, completing his degree in Fine Art Printmaking and later graduated from the masters program Social Practice and the Creative Environment in 2014. During his studies, he developed a project titled “The Uisce Campaign,” which saw a print of a drain cover sent to two-hundred-and-fifty unsuspecting recipients across the globe by way of the postal service; he later developed a project titled “Cathair Grá,” which saw forty-five electrical boxes as art spaces for artists from the community.

This 2015 image is a silkscreen print on Fabriano paper, measuring 600 x 600 mm. The image presents the ornate patterns of the Ardagh Chalice juxtaposed over gestural markings containing elements of local Limerick vernacular, found inscribed on the walls and streets throughout the city.

We thank Eoin Barry, and the staff of Limerick Printmakers, especially its manager, Jessica Tobin, for permission to reproduce this image and for kind assistance in composing this note. [End Page 86]
