Any survey of recent publications in Haitian Studies would reveal the narrow scope of the critical approach that tends to focus on a handful key themes. The desire to commemorate certain historical events also seems to help bury the very fabric of the field under layers of interpretations and theoretical speculations with disparate interests. This introduction calls for other forms of approach, new initiatives, and interpretative adventures that are free of any ideological docility and hermeneutical constraints. It summarizes how the special issue represents different ways to unearth rare archives and showcases unique connections between original documents on Haiti more often cited than actually read.
