Beginning with this issue, the editors of African American Review would like to salute senior scholars by cordially and informally inviting them to submit recent essays to a section that we will feature from time to time called At Large. As AAR approaches its fiftieth year in 2017, we hope thus to honor those women and men without whose careers neither scholarship in African American literature nor this journal would have been at all realizable.

As we were inspired at MLA in Austin, TX this year by a panel dedicated to his work, our first honoree is Dr. Houston A. Baker, Jr.
