Abstract

My friend Julio Maduro, who call himself a “Nationalist Historian of Aruba,” takes me on a tour of the island in his jeep. We survey the various breeds of wild animals as we drive inland from the shore. Julio names and describes the different species, and gives me a rough estimate of the total number of each type of creature. giving the history of the livestock, he explains the farm shutdown of the 1940’s that led to this continuing sprawl of animals, highlighting the dramatic appearance of the noisy wild donkeys.
