In this essay, Urs B. Leu discusses the contributions of Johann Jakob Scheuchzer, a Swiss physician and librarian with more than 800 correspondents; a Fellow of the Royal Society, he was widely published in the Philosophical Transactions and other periodicals. Scheuchzer’s primary work, Physica sacra, uses numerous illustrations to bolster his arguments about the origins of fossils.
