The Mayan Pope and His Competition: Local, National and Transnational Representations of the 2012 Phenomenon

This article reviews media coverage of the muchhyped end of a cycle in the Maya long count calendar in December 2012, focusing on the efforts of different indigenous and non-indigenous agents in Guatemala and beyond to claim its meaning. I note a convergence between Maya and New Age interpretations of the transcendental significance of the date, though I argue that the relevance of boundaries between Maya and others varied in terms of the positioning (local, national and transnational) of key players. This highlights challenges facing practitioners of contemporary Maya spirituality as it enters transnational circuits, particularly in terms of establishing religious authority.

Cet article passe en revue l’importante couverture médiatique dont a bénéficié la fin d’un cycle du calendrier du compte long maya prévue pour décembre 2012, et se focalise sur les efforts de différents acteurs autochtones et non-autochtones, au Guatemala et ailleurs, pour s’en réapproprier le sens. Il fait le constat d’une convergence entre les interprétations maya et new age concernant la signification transcendantale de cette date, tout en soutenant que l’importance des frontières entre les Mayas et les autres varie en fonction de la position (locale, nationale ou transnationale) des principaux acteurs. L’article met ainsi en évidence les défis auxquels sont confrontés les adeptes de la spiritualité maya contemporaine, au moment où celle-ci fait son entrée dans les circuits transnationaux, notamment pour établir une autorité religieuse.
