The Rhizome community is geo graphically dispersed and includes art ists, authors, designers, programmers, musicians, curators, critics and others. Rhizome brings people together by pro viding a platform for meaningful com munication and the exchange of ideas. Rhizome currently has subscribers in 23 countries. STRATEGIES As the World Wide Web explodes, people tend to forget that E-mail is one of the most lively and effective forms of communication on the Internet. Rhi zome E-mail lists establish networks of trust over time as subscribers exchange ideas and information. Trust helps fos ter community, and community pro vides a meaningful context for content by connecting it to people. The Rhizome Contentbase (http:// www.rhizome.org) combines notions of a magazine with those of a search en gine to provide interactive access to an edited wellspring of ideas. Understanding that most members of the new media art community integrate Web use into their work, Rhizome has structured the Contentbase to save time. Text objects are limited to a maximum 1,000 words, and the freshest entry in the Contentbase is featured on the first page of the site. Rhizome's editorial policy emphasizes work that is conceptually and techno logically innovative, rather than tradi tional media that have simply been "repurposed " or displays of the latest imaging software. Rhizome's scope in cludes commercial projects, such as CDROMs or Virtual Reality games, ap proached from an informed, critical perspective. The reaction of the institution's administration, however, was distinctly negative, due partly to the novel nature of his artistic endeavors, but also due to Theremin's status as a former political prisoner. It was only during the 1990s that it became possible to organize an electronic music studio, the Theremin Center, at the same institution. Conference participants received a great deal of information on the life of Theremin himself, on his creativity and DIFFERENCES Most art Web sites cover a range of topics: because of their breadth, they lack depth.
