Richard E. Flathman spent most of his career at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was George Armstrong Kelly Memorial Professor of Political Science. He authored eleven books and numerous articles, pursuing his unique brand of liberalism. We had the fun and privilege of studying with Dick, who taught us, among many other things, that it was gratuitous to try to justify an intellectual project in advance. The results would speak for themselves—one way or another. In that spirit we offer these essays For Dick, In Memoriam.
