Abstract

The aesthetic experience can be viewed as an example of a particular type of relationship between an instance and the representation of all previous, related instances in memory. To develop a model of the aesthetic experience, the author used recent work on information processing, mental representations of experience with instances and the processes that generate emotional responses. The usefulness of the model was tested with well-known paintings selected on the basis of their level of departure from realistic representation.
