Abstract

Nave di Luce, a synaesthetic and telematic artwork by Marcello Aitiani, combines different languages with specific expressive means such as music, painting, sculpture, performance, telematics and computer music. Taking the recent complexity theories as a starting point, it joins pictorial and sculptural elements to a double musical component that alternates live performance of Gregorian music and its following re-elaboration by computers, with pieces produced using digital systems. A special TV link (audio and video) and a network link (data) connect all the elements, enabling the piece to be performed simultaneously in three places in two different cities. This article analyzes the structure of the artwork as well as the theoretical assumptions and the compositional and mathematical processes on which it is based.
