This paper discusses the role of the prompt in telecommunications in terms of its antiphonal, sculptural and theatrical characteristics. It shows how artists have used the prompt, understood in this manner, to posit the existence of a virtual world that can be experienced and manipulated by users who are encouraged to create virtual identities. The paper concludes with a vision of the potential for art in telecommunications.
