In some of Paul Gauguin’s paintings he deviated from the Renaissance tradition of naturalistic art to a style that anticipates a return to the visual immediacy of composition in the frontal plane. Gauguin found this ‘honesty’ of the pictorial medium in the primitivism of an Italian fresco painter of the early fourteenth century.
