Abstract

The Tenth International Walter Scott Conference celebrated Jane Millgate’s extraordinary contributions to Scott scholarship. Her astute critical analyses have stimulated our own thinking about Scott’s works; her meticulous textual and bibliographical researches have illuminated our knowledge of their complex publishing history; and the Millgate Union Catalogue of the letters has made available a rich archive that will enable a deeper understanding of Scott and his contexts for generations to come. We all stand indebted not only to Jane Millgate’s brilliant scholarship, but also to the generous mentorship and collegiality that generates, as the following pieces (excerpted from the panel presentations) by major scholars demonstrate, important work undertaken by all members of the scholarly community she has helped build.
