Abstract

The majority of designers in applied disciplines seem unaware that by using computer-assisted technology they are committing themselves to a fundamental and fairly rapid paradigm change. The cliched quality of much work being produced is a consequence of too many digital trinkets being employed before the potential of the new medium as a thing in itself has evolved. The solution, if any, is an examination of the intrinsic aesthetic nature of this new medium before we are distracted by user-friendly productivity enhancers.
