From 1970 to 1980, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago offered an undergraduate and graduate program called Generative Systems. The program started as a single course and gradually became a full program, in synchronization with technological and social change. It can serve as one model of art/science/technology education. This article presents a brief history of its development and specific course descriptions. Lessons from the courses are distributed throughout this issue of Leonardo.
