  • Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of 2013: Brian Brewer
  • Bruce R. Burningham

The Cervantes Society of America is delighted to announce that Brian Brewer’s Spring 2013 article, “‘Jealosy and Usury in ‘El celoso extremeño,’” has been named the winner of the 2013 Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of the Year award.

Brewer’s article explores the early modern philosophical context of Cervantes’s novela ejemplar and argues that Carrizales’s exaggerated jealousy, which does not reflect contemporary notions of psychological verosimilitud, is grounded instead in seventeenth-century ideas regarding commercial ethics in which profit and lust are two sides of the same moral pathology.

The anonymous jury for the 2013 selection consisted of three members of the journal’s Editorial Board. These esteemed colleagues evaluated all the articles published in Cervantes during 2013 (not counting book reviews and notes) and chose Brewer’s essay as the year’s clear winner.

The Cervantes Society held an award ceremony at the January 2014 MLA Convention in Chicago during the CSA’s annual business meeting. At this ceremony Brewer was presented with a plaque commemorating his achievement.

Congratulations, Brian! [End Page 9]
