When each element of a vertical column of lights is rapidly modulated so as to present successive slices of a two-dimensional image, the entire image can be seen by sweeping one’s eyes rapidly past the column, or Lightstick. The author describes the image-generating process and a number of novel artworks using these images. Two research psychologists discuss the unusual visual effects produced by the Lightstick.
