He was a man of unusual competence who contributed to the development of Unesco and never ceased, in the years that followed. to show his interest and support in the work of this Organization. I wish to associate myself with his colleagues of the early years of Unesco who will always remember the scientist, the artist. and the defender of most righteous causes that Frank Malina was. Amadou-Mahtar M’Bow Director General Unesco 7 Place de Fontenoy 75700 Paris, France It was with shock and sadness that 1 read of the death of Frank J. Malina, the motive force behind Leonardo. Leonardo has been developed, by Frank Malina’s efforts, into a major international journal. In particular. it is one of the few eclectic periodicals in English with an appeal to readers from many disciplines. For instance (in terms of my own interests),during the past decade or so,Leonardo has been the key journal considering the issue of picture perception within an interdisciplinary context. Scholars from history. philosophy, psychology and art have used Leonardo as a forum to debate on this fundamental contemporary topic. And it is to Frank Malina’s credit that he initiated and promoted this discussion. Other readers, I’m sure. can point to other innovative features of Leonardo. David R. Topper Associate Professor Department o f History The University o f Winnipeg Winnipeg. Manitoba R3B 2E9 Canada It was with great sadness that I read of the death of Dr. Malina. I found his work in Leonardo to be among the most stimulatingand professional efforts in the visual arts. There are few forumsfor those interested in the interdisciplinary study of art, science, and technology and the demise of Leonardo will affect myself and other researchers. I wish you and other members of the Leonardo staff well and hope that it will be possible to continue publication. Robert I. Goler Curator of Collections Frances Tavern Museum 54 Pearl Street New York, NY 10004. U.S.A. I was impressed by reading the obituary of Frank J. Malina in the winter 1982 issue of Leonardo. I had not known of his extensive work in aeronautics and his explorations of light and kinetics as visual art mediums. The Journal can now be seen as the extension of the rich involvements of the man who founded it. I sincerely hope the Journal will be able to continue publication for many more years. Lynn Olson 4607 Claussen Lane Valparaiso. IN 46803. U.S.A. I have been a Leonardo subscriber from the beginning. The news of Dr. Malina’s death came as a great shock to me. He was a focal figure in his efforts to integrate the no-man’s land between art and technology. His disappearance fills me with great apprehension and a great feeling of loss. Edward Zajec 707 Sumner Ave. Swacuse. NY 13210, U.S.A. The death of Dr. Frank Malina is a great loss to the art world. He was exceptional in his capacity for handling delicate matters in a most professional, humane and responsible manner. I do, indeed, hope that Leonardo is able to continue the work which Dr. Malina began in helping to bridge the seemingly diverse courses of artistic and scientific research. Robert C . Morgan Art History Dept. Rochester Institute of Technology Rochester. NY 14623, U.S.A. The relationship of this Journal and Leonardo. or better, the relationship between the editors of this Journal and of Leonardo. were among the warmest and most cordial. and I hope that I have been as helpful to him as he has been to us. I spent a week at a conference with him several years ago and found it a most stimulatingexperience, during which I came to admire his broad knowledge, good...
