Leonardo, Vol. 15, No. 3, pp. 231-232, 1982 Printed in Great Britain TERMINOLOGY 0024-094X/82/03023 1-O2$03.OO/O Pergamon Press Ltd. The terms defined below were selected from artists’ Articles and Notes published in the previous issue of Leonardo. Each definition is followed by an indication of the volume and page ofLeonard0 on which the term first appears. The terms were not found in the art dictionaries among the dictionaries listed in Leonardo 15, 68 (1982) or they are used in a new sense. Some are terms that have been carried over into the field of art from the natural and social sciences, from mathematics and from technology. Numbers in brackets, e.g. [I 1, 171, refer to the dictionaries mentioned above. The definitions are not presumed to be unassailable. The editors would, therefore, welcome the comments of readers on the definitions presented. 1128. Anaglyphic free-vision fusion (AFVF) stereogram (in visual art)-(l5,98) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 7,261 (1974):free vision; 14, 60 (1981): stereogram) 1129. Archimedian solids, Archimedian polyhedra, semiregular polyhedra (in geometry)-A group of 13 geometrical solids having regular polygons as faces, but the faces are not all of the same kind. (15, 96 [Peter Pearce and Susan Pearce, Polyhedra Primer (New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1978)])(Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 10,326(1977): Platonic solids; Term 1149: regular polygon) 1130. Atomic mass unit (in physics)-A unit of mass for expressing masses of atoms, molecules or nuclear particles. (15, 98 [21]) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 6. 261 (1973): atom, moss and nucleus; 8, 68 (1975): molecule) 1131. Color jet plotter (in computer technology)-A computer plotter that prints in color by the precisely controlled delivery of ink in the primary colors through three tiny nozzles. It produces 25 dots per mm2 and permits a large gamut of colors to be obtained. (15, 118) 1132. Cytoplasm (in biology)-The part of the living matter of a cell that surrounds thecell’s nucleus and is enclosed by a cell membrane. (15, 121 [21]) (Cf. Term 1144: nucleus) 1133. Descriptive geometry-That application ofgeometry in which representation of 3-dimensional structures is projected upon two planes so that their metrical properties can be deduced accurately. (15,97 [3]) DNA (in biology)-Abbreviation for any of the various deoxyribonucleic acids found in cell nuclei and associated with the transmission of genetic information. (15, 121 [21]) (Cf. Term 1136: genetic code) 1134. 1135. Focused-image hologram, reflection hologram (in photography )-(15.90) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 5, 169(1972):hologram; 6, 163 (1973): holography; 12,65 (1979): reflection holography) 1136. Genetic code (in biology)-The code by which inherited characteristics are passed from generation to generation. The codebearing material is DNA, which is stored in cell nuclei. (15, 121[18,21]) (Cf. Term 1134: DNA) 1137. Holographic stereogram (inphotography)-(15.90) (Cf.Term 1142: multiplex hologram) 1138. Imageplane hologram, reflectionhologram(inphof0graphy)- (15, 90) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 5, 169 (1972): hologram; 6, 163 (1973): holography; 12, 65 (1979): reflection holography) 1139. Imagetransfer hologram, reflection hologram (in photogruphy )-(15,90) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo5,169( 1972)hologram;6, 163 (1973): holography; 12, 65 (1979): reflection holography) 1140. Internal hologram (in phorography)-(15,90) (Cf. Term 1142: multiplex hologram) 1141. Kaleidoscopic projector (in visual art)-A projector having a photographic slide, for example as objective, and a pair of plane mirrors which is devised to produce on a screen a rotationally symmetrical image. (15, 105) (Cf. Term 1157: Symmetricon) 1142. Multiplex hologram, internal hologram, holographic movie, synthetic movie, holographic stereogram (in photography)-A hologram usually in the form of a film joined at the two ends to make a vertical cylinder which is illuminated from below by an ordinary clear shortfilament lamp. Viewers can seeanimation when it is rotated on itsaxisor when they walk around it. Semi-cylindrical and flat internal holograms are also produced. (15.90) (Cf. Terminology, Leonardo 5, 1969(1972): hologram; 6. 163 (1973); holography; 12, 65 (1979): Holodeon and multiplex holography) 1143. Nucleon (in physics)-A constituent of the atomic nucleus: either a proton or a neutron. (15,96[18])(Cf.Terminology,Leonardo6. 261 (1973): atom and nucleus) 1144. Nucleus, cell nucleus (in biology)-The central part...
