Abstract

The author describes the sculptures she has made during the past 20 years from plaster, metal, etc. Her first aim has been to provide objects with minimal visible support so that they give viewers the feeling that they are of very light weight. Her second aim has been to provide rearrangeable groupings of independent units that convey a sense of community relationship between the units. Some of the groupings have units only a few centimeters in height, others as tall as 1.5 meters. She started making these groupings about four years before moving in 1969 to southern Italy, where she and Arno Mondello launched a small community for artists, artisans, writers and agriculturalists. She presents a brief discussion of the materials and techniques she employs and of examples of her sculptures and concludes by reviewing the aims of the community and some of the organizational problems encountered.
