Abstract

The authors point out their interest in the artistic aspects of patterns and forms caused by flowing viscous liquids. In particular, they describe the design, construction and operation of a flow system that produces a central ‘water bell’ sculptural form. The various factors that influence the form of the sheet of liquid falling front a radial-flow column or stack are presented, as well as the results obtained by adding colorants to the liquid. Photographs of especially interesting examples of the types of flow obtained illustrate their text. A study of artistic form has been produced that is both an example of fruitful collaboration of artist and scientist and of faculty and students in separate academic institutions.
