In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

84 Books sample legal documents provide artists and collectors with enough knowledge to at least ascertain that the lawyer selected is knowledgeable in this somewhat unique area of the law, where there are few experts. In turn, the book will provide the otherwise competent lawyer, who is admittedly unfamiliar with the subject area, with a broad overview of the law and a quick initial reference to those topics and avenues requiring detailed exploration. Several quick references will reveal the flavor and scopeof the book. Does the reader know that the U.S. Internal Revenue Code (income tax) has special provisions concerning an artist’s retirement plans? How many readers have heard of the Universal Copyright Convention? When will display of the national flag merely provoke or inspire the viewer and when will it be a violation of law? What are US. Customs restrictions, if any, on antiques (stained glass and tapistries) produced prior to 1701?What laws govern the labor relations between the employer and employees of a gallery or of a museum? When does the US. Internal Revenue Service conclude that a collector becomes a dealer and thus subject to different tax rates? What are the consequences of the loss or destruction of an art work? How might those consequencesbe mitigated? What Every Artist and Collector Should Know About the Law is an invaluable introduction to the more mundane but unavoidable legal dimensions of the world of art. A Visual Dictionary of Art. Ann Hill, ed. Heinemann Secker & Warburg, London, 1974. 640 pp., illus. E8.50. The Dictionary, written for the nonspecialist, is an impressive collection of about 4,500 entries (most of which are brief biographies of painters and sculptors) and about 2500 illustrations (over 10°/o in color) of art works. Coverage extends from prehistoric to present-day art, embracing not only Occidental but also Oriental, African and Oceanic art. Most biographies are several lines in length, some with illustrations, for example those of Myong-kuk Kim and of Vilhelm Hammershrai. Ten or twelve lines plus a small illustration are given to John Smibert, Jean Dubuffet and Ordilon Redon. About $ page of text, accompanied by a page of illustration, is devoted each to Albrecht Durer, Michelangelo and Pablo Picasso. The nonbiographical entries are included in the alphabetical listing. Some examples are Euston Road School, haniwa (Japanese pottery), Huon Gulf (in New Guinea), Khmer art, Naga (in Indian mythology), paper, Rossano Codex and slaked lime. Included in the first 64pages are several pages of maps and 30 essays that constitute a condensed history of art-some of the titles are ‘Paleolithic Art’, ‘The Baroque’ and ‘Chinese Art’. At the end of the book is a diverse reading list and a helpful index. The entries of the Dictionary are well crossreferenced . BOOKS RECEIVED Ancient Pagan Symbols. Elisabeth Goldsmith.
