Books 91 subject and its treatment in the rest of the book. Initially, he queries the validity of his ‘message’ in the context of the high quality of the exhibition. The tortured baroque courses of his language provide an effusiveexample of information media abuse. A so much more appropriate prelude could have been a haiku poem. Simple yet pervasive, such a poem would have set tone and scale. There are many kinds of books-those solely for reading those prestigious volumes designated for a table, those for information value, while others are for the sheer delight of the looking. Happily, this book belongs primarily to the last category. It has been a delightful experience to have this book, to live with and to savor it. The photographs deal with architecture in a very broad, typically oriental sense. Forms, shape, textures are regarded as islands of beauty to be appreciated and treasured in secret or in meditative privacy. The orientals lack our sense of ‘formal beauty’ of strong, visually prominent, large spaces and monumental avenues. They concentrate instead on those aspects of the surroundings that evoke a truly human response in the observer. This attitude is eloquently expressed through the camera eye as it focuses on subtle juxtapositions of textures that soothe and calm the mind or on the sweepingcurve of a roof that inspires power and drama. The photos are a fascinating journey; they constantly please, excite, and educate. The lesson for Westernersmay be a new comprehension of the beauty that exists in the eye of the beholder. Do we indeed want to see our cities and their architecture as ‘formal order’? We can only thank Paolo Riani and his Japanese friends for indicating a rather different and quite beautiful way to us.
