EXHIBITIONS AND MEETINGS 1.1-‘Design, Society and the Future’ was the theme of the September, 1969 Congress of the InternationalCouncilof Societiesof Industrial Design (12 Carlton House Terrace, London S.W.l, England ). Amongthespeakerswererepresentativesfrom the New York Institute for the Future and the Cambridge, Massachusetts, Organizationfor Social and TechnicalInnovation. 1.2-An international exhibition called ‘Computer -Kunst, On the Eve of Tomorrow’ was organized by Kathe Schroder and held from 19 October to 12November 1969at the Kubus an der Aegidienkirche (Friedrichswalll3, Hanover,Ger. Fed. Rep.). The exhibition was held under the auspices of Clarissa-Contemporary-Artand Gottjried-WilhelmLiebniz -Gesellschaft e.V. in collaboration with the Landeshaupstadt, Hanover and the Amerikahaus, Hanover. Films were also shown and discussions were held. I.3-‘Film 69’, an international film technology conference and exhibition, was arranged by the British Kinematograph,Sound and TelevisionSociety (Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, England, 2327 June 1969). The meeting was the practical outcome of a need to establish a centre in London for information on techniques and discoveries in motion picture film usage. 1.4-The second weekend course and workshop on non-numerical programming was arranged by the Computer Arts Society at Time Sharing, Ltd. Sixcomputer terminals and a graph plotter were available. 1.5-An exhibition, ‘Plastic as Plastic, was held at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C., U.S.A., 5 October 1969-19 January 1970). The new applications, designs and shapes on display were not derived from the early image of plastic as an inferior substitute for glass, metal or wood but from the unique characteristics of plastics themselves. The 250 objects in the exhibition were supplemented for the Washington showing by additional large objects, including the first plastic airplane, an automobile, a tension-structured vacation home and a sprayed urethane-foam structure covering some 500 square feet.
