THE ARTISTIC EXPLOSION The most exciting and important recent development in the art world is that there are astonishingly more painters and sculptors today than ever before in history-and many times the number existing even thirty years ago. There are many more professionals making their living through their artistic efforts and, what is especially interesting, there are many more part-time amateurs. The enormous and unprecedented growth of amateur participation is both the most unique and the most heartening feature of the current artistic scene. It indicates a very broad base of interest in the arts which provides the best possible augury for an even more promising artistic future. Leonardo’s pages should reflect the fact of this widespread interest and activity, which is still growingby leaps and bounds. In doing so,Leonardo would demonstrate that, contrary to the sensational news headlines portraying a world dominated by material greed, violence and drugs, vastly increasing numbers of more typical people are quietly working in a serious way to make the world a more beautiful and a better place to live. Etienne Souriau servira 8 rappeler 8 beaucoup de lecteurs la conception platonicienne de l’art qui a ttt d’une importance capitale presque jusqu’8 nosjours pour la formation et le jugement de I’esthttique de I’art et de I’artiste. Mais il y a ici et 18 quelques observations qui me paraissent peu heureuses. L’exemple de Filippo Lippi est ma1 choisi. Affirmer que le Pape accorda son absolution parce qu’il reconnut ‘comme situation ntcessaire du gtnie’ le fait que le frtre Filippo Lippi, Carme, eQt enlevt une religeuse et vtcu une vie qui fut en contraste avec son ttat de moine, me parait gratuit. Cela dkpouille de son ‘importance chrttienne’ le geste du Pontife qui a plut6t voulu tviter A un moine demourir en&at deptcht,et non excuserun chrttien d’avoir ma1vtcu 8 cause de son ‘gtnie’ ...(Mais la, nous touchons 8 une situation psycho-religeuse qui nous porterait assez loin de notre sujet, et d’ailleurs incomprthensible, peut-&re, pour qui ignore, ou tient peu compte de la doctrine de I’Eglise Catholique ...). ‘La pittura 2. cosa mentale’, disait Leonard de Vinci. ‘I1 libtrait ainsi l’artiste-peintre de cette condition illibtrale de travailleur manuel qu’il avait au Moyen Age’ . . . I1 s’agit 18 d’une ‘liberation’ idtale puisque, si la peinture est une ‘chose qui se passe dans I’esprit’d’abord, il faut bien que I’artiste, apds, ait recours au travail manuel s’ilveut que son ‘travail mental’ ait une forme ‘visible’. Je ne croispas quelartftrence au ‘ttltluminoscope aveccircuit video’de N. Schoffersoit bonne. A mon avis le nom de cet artiste pouvait &trementionnt pour d’autres oeuvres: le ‘ttltluminoscope avec circuit video’ reproduit, et non fidtlement, et sans la couleur, I’oeuvre qu’il est prtftrable de voir directement: Philips, ou la Gtneral Electric, ou tout autre maison du mCme genre, pourraient appliquer un ‘circuit video’ aux oeuvres de bien d’autres artistes avec le mCme rtsultat.
