Abstract

Empire received many positive reviews and several serious, engaged critiques. It was also vilified by some reviewers who did not engage seriously with the arguments of the book. In this essay I try to understand this phenomenon by considering the content of attacks on the book by two authors of the center Left (Alan Wolfe and Mitchell Cohen) and two of the traditional anti-imperialist Left (Atilio Boron and Timothy Brennan).
