Abstract

The acceptance and performance of Americanness as defined by a dominant discourse is manifest in the ways Muslims express their religious identification and acquiesce to the issues that are important to the state. In this article, we choose one particular example to highlight a trajectory of responses that limits Muslim history in the United States to positive and uncritical representations of the self, thereby circumscribing avenues of dissent and challenges to authority.
