Author of Conspicuous Production: Automobiles and Elites in Detroit, he is currently researching the history of Canadian urban transit in the 1914-50 period. BARBARA LORENZKOWSKI is a doctoral candidate in the history department at the University of Ottawa. JOHN MANLEY teaches North American history in the Department of Historical and Critical Studies at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, England. He has published several articles on various aspects of the history ofthe Canadian Communist Party, and is currently completing a monograph on its industrial politics during the interwar years.
