Abstract

Digital technologies offer performance artists remarkable new tools and unique perspectives for creating and presenting work. In a world increasingly mediated by digital devices, new innovations are driving us toward more and more immersive experiences. Artists are pioneering new technologies, questioning and pressing against the boundaries of these synthetic environments and using the Internet to reach around the world to connect with other artists and new audiences. With the emergence of augmented-reality technology, virtual reality is now bursting at the seams and about to spill back out into the world. The overlay of the virtual onto the real is becoming more commonplace, and artists are poised to not only navigate these new technologies but also locate and push past new boundaries.
