Unusual punctuation, excessive spacing, various indentations, and symbols to impart a sense of truncation to this dream-like poem.
The speaker of the poem experiences an involuntary memory. The shape of fringe lichen is reminiscent of a tilde, which sparks a memory of the speaker’s mother, the Portuguese word for mother being “mãe.”
