Between Dance and Music I found the concert ofworks by the Musical Research Center ofRome (CRM) disappointing. For example, Agostino Di Scipio's creation Kairos, for saxophone and tape, appeared to be a live experiment with every sound that a saxophone can make, heard over a background ofwaves that could carry screws. Michelangelo Lupone 's Mira, for tape and ballerina, seemed to hide its musical poverty with the dancer's movements (or perhaps it was the reverse?). Esercizi by Domenico Guaccero was without real interest for me. Only Laura Bianchini 's piece seemed noteworthy: Note DifJerenze, for saxophone and tape, gave evidence of a wish to make the saxophone and tape converse, in order to show their similarities and their differences. GRAME:Musical Route The same care is present in PierreAlainJaffrenou 's Cello and Tape Suite, a lyrical arid majestic work in which the tape is used as a second missing cello, fusing into the present cello's timbre. The same concert presented another piece byJaffrenou: A German Song.It was classically composed, but changed style with the use ofsynthesizer , cello, bass clarinet (the timbres ofwhich blended well), plus a vocalist (strong performance by Laure Florentin, soprano). On the other hand, Estager's La PetitePersonne Interieure , a work for piano and voice, did not manage to take offfrom tame lyrics. Robert Pascal's Gest brought one back to intimate cello and appealed to the imagination. InJerome Dorival's and Yann Orlarey's Divin Chaos for wind quintet, played by the Concert Impromptu, one could discover the will to use chaos as a creative principle. The Mfnneludies At Musiques en Scene, GRAME allows children and composers to meet for one day of concerts, followed by a discussion on the subject "Children and Musical Creation". The Momeludies concerts showed that children can create contemporary music and that they can also speak aboutwhat they are doing . It is worth noting, among many others, the works VentsdesDeserts by Michel Mazzili, Le Compte estbonby Jean-Pierre Drouet, Canon desArbresby Steve Waring and Animaux-Limonades by Marc-Olivier Dupin. This event, held in collaboration with the Teaching Musicians in Primary Schools Training Center (CFMI), invited teachers, children and composers to exchange thoughts about their experiences of contemporary music. It was a marathon week, punctuated by about 15 concerts and including the performance ofsome 50 works. The programming was so eclectic that I wondered whether there was anyone who would have attended the entire festival. I hope that next year an even broader public will venture to sample the array of new music offerings that GRAME makes available through Music en Scene.
