In May of 1990 we distributed an “invitationfor audio-recording sub missions”to Leonardo subscribers,members of the International Societyfor Art, Sciencesand Technology (ISAST)and subscribers to Fineart Forum (a section of ISAST’s electronic newsletter,FAST).Part of the invitation read: “Leonardois looking for recorded original material that reflects the musical goals and interests of Leonardo, and which reflects the use of contemporary technology to create music. ...” under 6 min per submission and 3) all submissionsmust be original recordings, the rights of which are owned by the creator. We received 48 submissionsfrom nine countries. Because of the limitation on the length of submissions,many entries were excerpts from longer works. JournaZCDJury for review. Thejurors had the option of reviewingthe submissions ‘blind’ (without knowing the identities of the creators) and the majority of the jury did so. Eachjuror ranked the submissionsfrom 4 (recommended for inclusion ) to 0 (recommended stronglyagainst inclusion). They were only permitted to rank a total of 15 works at 3 or 4.Thejury process yielded a highly objective review of the entries, with a strong consensus emerging from thejury for the most part. The sequence of the pieces was edited to create the most pleasing listening experience . This final sequence in no way reflects a ranking of the artists’works. We encourage listeners to seek out other works by these talented composers.
