Abstract

In this essay, Phillips navigates her complicated relationship with food: growing up in a macrobiotic household, taking on the responsibility of cooking with two working parents; dining under the financial restraints of graduate school; facing the an eating disorder and deteriorating health; and, throughout, reckoning the complex cultural and sociopolitical underpinnings of our food choices and problems. Various food movements are addressed, assessed, and shot through with personal reflection.
