This special issue of Transformation is the outcome of a project on 'The Sub-National Politics of the ANC' conducted under the auspices of the Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP) of the University of the Witwatersrand. It was facilitated by generous financial support provided by the Ford Foundation, which was much appreciated. Particular thanks are due to Shameen Govender of SWOP for undertaking arrangements of the various workshops which were held at Wits, and to the Ford Foundation for financial support.
