The work that follows was selected by poetry workshop leaders from the 2014 Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop, held at Brown University, Providence, RI. The poems our leaders selected represent the diverse range of voices, backgrounds, and stylistic inclinations that were found among this lively and talented group of Callaloo writers. From Brooklyn poet Aja Monet Bacquie’s tough, visceral imagery of longing and rejection, to Milwaukee-based Ching-In Chen’s stirring meditations on violence, to Louisville native Jeremy Clark’s heartfelt poetic invention, this cohort consisted of those both widely published and emerging, producing work both daringly innovative and raw with emotion. These writers convened in Providence brimming with intellect and drive and came away from the workshop—due, in no small part, to our workshop leaders’ attention and instruction—fostering ever-expanding poetic imaginations.
