Les processus de stigmatisation entourant l’obeah à Sainte-Lucie sont analysés du point de vue de la moralisation négative de la « sorcellerie ». Le concept d’altérisation est utile à la compréhension de ce phénomène – tant du point des discours coloniaux, religieux, populaires, médiatiques que scientifiques – et il devient indispensable pour saisir la différenciation sociale et morale dont sont l’objet ces pratiques et les personnes associées. La réception de l’altérisation doit aussi être intégrée à cette analyse, ce qui est ici donné à voir via l’étude des éthiques ordinaires et des stratégies de légitimation des praticiens de/associés à l’obeah. Cette perspective démontre la nécessité de concevoir la production de l’altérité comme un processus simultané d’intériorisation et d’extériorisation.
The analysis of the processes of stigmatization against obeah in St. Lucia is conducted from the point of view of the negative moralization of “witchcraft.” The concept of Othering is useful to the understanding of this phenomenon—both in terms of colonial, religious, popular, media and scientific discourses—and it becomes essential to grasp the social and moral differentiation that these practices and people associated with them are facing. The reception of Othering must also be part of the analysis, through the study of ordinary ethics and strategies of legitimation of practitioners of / or associated with obeah. This perspective demonstrates the need to develop the production of Otherness both as an internalizing and externalizing process.
