Abstract

The archival publication includes letters from the Russian-French sociologist, Jaqcues Novicow, to Gabriel Tarde. The letters discuss these two sociologists’ works in the context of the emergence of sociology as a discipline. Among the problems touched on in the letters are social Darwinism, the role of psychology in social processes, pacifism, internationalism, cosmopolitanism, and criminality.

Sarah Al-Matary’s introduction contextualizes the relationship between Jacques Novicow and Gabriel Tarde and explores their relationship. Based in Odessa, Jacques Novicow primarily wrote in French and built his scholarly career outside of Russia. This publication helps put in context the life and work of one of Europe’s first sociologists.
