2 OHIO VALLEY HISTORY Hanno Scheerer is a research associate at the University of Trier, Germany. He completed his Ph.D. thesis on struggles for land control in Ohio’s Virginia Military District in February 2013. Among his publications are a book chapter on the political history of proprietary South Carolina in Creating and Contesting Carolina (University of South Carolina Press, 2013) and an article on NativeEuropean relations in the Ohio Valley, forthcoming in 2014. William S. Belko is associate professor of history and director of the Graduate Program in Early American Studies at the University of West Florida. He is the author of The Triumph of the Antebellum Free Trade Movement (2012), which won Phi Alpha Theta’s 2013 Best Subsequent Book Award; The Invincible Duff Green: Whig of the West (2006); and editor of America’s Hundred Years’ War: U. S. Expansion to the Gulf Coast and the Fate of the Seminole, 1763-1858 (2011). His biography of Philip Pendleton Barbour, Philip Pendleton Barbour, 1783-1841: An Old Republican in King Andrew’s Court, is currently under review. Robert G. Barrows is professor of history at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis.
