This special issue addresses history, films, and literature that discuss and rewrite the Algerian War of Independence as the turning point for a time beyond colonialism that could lead to a transnational understanding of History and representations. The contributions articulate the connections between imaginaries and real politics, deconstructing a linear understanding of memory and a rigidly nationalist understanding of history that can only exclude a significant part of the population that does not fit in a binary paradigm. The issue demonstrates how the work of fiction often helps displace monolithic interpretations of history, allowing for the recognition of complex narratives as a political category.
